Американский легион
Военно-патриотическая общественно-политическая организация, крупнейшая в мире организация ветеранов. Основана в 1919 с целью защиты интересов ветеранов первой мировой войны двадцатью офицерами - участниками боевых действий во Франции. После окончания второй мировой войны в организацию был открыт доступ ветеранам и этой войны, а позднее и ветеранам войны в Корее [Korean War] и Вьетнаме [Vietnam War], то есть всех войн, в которых участвовали США. Проводит ежегодные съезды [conventions], на которых избираются Национальный исполнительный комитет [national executive committee] и руководитель - "национальный командующий" [national commander]. Финансирует программы поддержки ветеранов-инвалидов и их семей, а также программы военно-спортивного воспитания молодежи. Легион - "против всех -измов", за "американские идеалы", против разоружения. С 1919 издает ежемесячник "Американ лиджен мэгэзин" [American Legion Magazine]. Около 3 млн. членов (2005), 15 тыс. местных отделений [Post]. Штаб-квартира в г. Индианаполисе, шт. Индиана и в г. Вашингтоне.
